The Maple Syrup Diet

Beyonce Knowles has made the Maple Syrup Diet famous. She used it to lose 20 pounds in 10 days before the filming of “Dream Girls.” Beyonce and other Hollywood starlets see the Maple Syrup Diet as a great way to detox and then start fresh with a healthier diet.

Since Beyonce is known for making it a popular diet it’s also called “The Beyonce Diet.”  Before Beyonce, the diet was alternately known as the Master Cleanser, the Lemon Cleanse, the Lemon Cleansing Diet, the Cayenne Pepper Diet, and the Maple Syrup diet. It was formulated in the 1950’s by a naturopath named Stanley Burroughs.

The Maple Syrup Diet is most certainly not a lifestyle diet. It’s a form of cleanse that’s meant to purge the body of all prior food intake and to clean the body for a new diet of healthier foods.  This diet can only be used for a limited time. It is considered to be a great way to rid the body of toxins and to get a lifestyle diet off to a good start. It is said that you can use this diet safely for three to ten days. Beware that the first two days of the diet have a cleansing reaction – meaning that one should be prepared to deal with two days of diarrhea.

People who have used the Maple Syrup Diet claim that the diet causes immediate weight loss and makes the dieter see, smell, hear and feel better. In addition, it is said to help rid a person’s body of ailments that might have afflicted them for years.

Here’s how to make the maple syrup solution:

  • 3 quarts of spring water
  • 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 cup of pure grade B maple syrup (not flavored pancake syrup)
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Pour it all into a one gallon jug and shake. Drink 8 to 12 glasses of the mixture each day.

There are both positive and negative aspects of this diet, or cleanse.

As a byproduct of the detoxification of the body dieters may have cravings, aches, pains, fatigue and irritability. It’s difficult to stay on a very low calorie liquid diet when other people in a dieter’s home are eating their regular diet. It’ll be hard to get out during the first few days as the dieter will be spending lots of time running to the bathroom. This is an extremely low calorie diet – about 500 calories a day so no exercise is recommended.

On the positive side, the mixture tastes good. Dieters lose weight immediately as their bodies shed pounds of fecal matter. In a fasting state people sometimes experience feelings of euphoria and extreme serenity.

  1. On the first day after your Maple Syrup Diet you can only drink unsweetened fruit juices.
  2. On the second day you can add light vegetable soups and a few crackers.
  3. You can begin eating a light diet on the third day. Do not eat foods that contain a lot of fat.

Anyone using this diet should keep in mind that it’s a fasting or detox program. The Maple Syrup Diet, while causing quick weight loss, is not recommended for long term use. If you decide you’d like to try this diet, it’s recommended that you get your doctor’s okay first.
